This is the corner, off the main Serrekunda-Banjul highway, where Mr Deyda Hydara was shot dead on December 16, 2004 by a killer squad operating with impunity during Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship.

The late Mr Hydara was co-owner and editor of The Point newspaper in The Gambia.

Mr Hydara was an unswervingly loyal supporter to those who saw the value of journalism and its role in democratic development. He politely spoke truth to power, yet also spent much of his time fighting for the release of imprisoned colleagues and protesting against their torture. Throughout, he was a diplomatic operator.

Mr Hydara was one of the most prominent victims of Jammeh’s regime. There were many others.

However, the wheels of justice are turning in relation to the regime’s crimes. In Mr Hydara’s case arrest warrants were issued last year for two of those believed responsible for Deyda’s murder.
